Oregon-Texas in Alamo; Beavers-Broncos in Hawaii

Pac-12 sends 9 teams to bowls

by: COURTESY OF MICHAEL WORKMAN - Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota and the Ducks are headed to San Antonio to play Texas in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 30.It's Oregon versus Texas in the Dec. 30 Alamo Bowl at San Antonio.

And Oregon State against Boise State in the Dec. 24 Hawaii Bowl at Honolulu.

The bowl schedule was set Sunday, when the final BCS standings came out and the 10-2 Ducks just missed a spot in a BCS bowl.

Oregon had played in a BCS bowl the past four seasons, and the Ducks were eligible for an at-large berth this year by finishing in the top 14 — 10th — in the BCS standings.

Instead, the Ducks get to be the true visiting side against a Texas team that went 8-4 in the regular season, losing 30-10 to Baylor on Saturday.

"Our players will be excited to take on an iconic program and iconic coach," Oregon coach Mark Helfrich says, referring to Texas' program and veteran coach, Mack Brown.

The Longhorns are 2-0 in Alamo bowls, having defeated Iowa in 2006 and Oregon State in 2012.

"We're very excited about coming back to the Alamo Bowlm" Brown said. "So excited to be playing Oregon. We know it's a tremendous challenge. These guys are like Baylor, they can score fast, and they do a tremendous job.

"You need to win your last game, regardless of where you're coaching. That's what our guys are aware of."

The Longhorns are 4-1 all-time against the Ducks, although Oregon won the most-recent meeting, 35-30 in the 2000 Holiday Bowl.

The Alamo Bowl, in the Alamodome, will kick off at 3:45 p.m. PT.

Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota said Sunday that it won't be difficult for the Ducks to get motivated to play Texas in the Alamo Bowl.

"Not at all," Mariota said. "For the most part, guys will be excited. We have a lot of guys who are from Texas, and a lot of guys who have not been to Texas. We're going to be at an awesome venue and playing a traditional college program in the country."

UO center Hroniss Grasu said that "getting a win in this bowl game will be huge for this program, for Coach Helfrich and momentum in our favor and to get better for next season."

The Ducks are going to their sixth consecutive bowl and their 21st in the past 25 seasons. They have won their last two trips, beating Kansas State 35-17 in the 2013 Fiesta Bowl and Wisconsin 45-38 in the 2012 Rose Bowl.

Boise State takes an 8-4 record into its match-up with the 6-6 Beavers, who finished their regular season with five consecutive losses.

Kickoff is 5 p.m. PT.

The Broncos feature quarterback Grant Hedrick from Central High in Independence, Or.

The Beavers are 5-2 in bowl games under coach Mike Riley.

ESPN will televise both the Alamo and Hawaii bowls.

A record nine Pac-12 teams are bowl-bound.
