Cover Oregon director Rocky King is out on medical leave.
The director of the Oregon Health Authority will take temporary control of the embattled health insurance exchange.
Since Cover Oregon was supposed to start enrolling new customers on October 1, Rocky King has faced substantial criticism.
The website roll out has been plagued with problems and some customers have received other people's sensitive information.
King has now asked for three months of medical leave.
Director of the Oregon Health Authority Bruce Goldberg will take his place for a short while. But it's unlikely King will return.
Cover Oregon's board chair Liz Baxter sought and received permission from the board to look for a replacement.
"We do need to have a search for an perhaps longer-term interim director," she said.
Oregonians who want to get heath insurance by January 1 have until Wednesday to submit an application.
Nearly 3500 people have enrolled through Cover Oregon so far.
Enrollment is scheduled to remain open until the end of March.
