Boil water alert issued for part of SW Portland

The Portland Water Bureau is warning approximately 500 residents of Southwest Portland to boil their water until further notice.

The affected area is around southwest 30th and Vermont. According to the bureau, work on a pipe service the area caused it to lose pressure, potentially allowing contaminants to enter it.

The contaminants can include organisms such as bacteria, viruses and parasites that can cause symptoms such as nausea, cramps, diarrhea and associated headaches.

People living in the affected area should use boiled or bottled water for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth and food preparation until further notice.

According to the bureau, boiled water should be brought to a boil, allowed to boil for one minute, and let cool before using.

Lab tests are expected by noon Wednesday.
