Man in wheelchair killed crossing Pacific Avenue
A 55-year-old Forest Grove man was killed early Monday morning when his wheelchair was struck by a sport utility vehicle on Pacific Avenue.
Police said John David Hacker of Forest Grove died at the scene. The SUV driver, 68-year-old Donald Watts of Aloha, stayed at the accident scene and is cooperating with police in the investigation.
Forest Grove police said the accident happened at about 6:08 a.m. in the 3900 block of Pacific Avenue, also known as Tualatin Valley Highway. Police said the man was apparently trying to cross Pacific Avenue from the south side of the highway in an area that was not a marked crosswalk or pedestrian crossing area.
A witness told police that the man had made it across the eastbound lanes but was struck by the SUV traveling west. It was still dark at the time of the crash and the victim reportedly was wearing dark clothing and difficult to see, according to a witness.
