Driver in I-205 crash hospitalized

One man is hospitalized after a single car crash that closed the southbound lanes of I-205 Saturday evening.

The driver of the Volodymyr Kokhanevych, 19, is in an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A passenger, Roman Kokhanevych, 16, has been located at his residence.

A third occupant has been identified but not yet located. His name was not immediately released.

The crash is being investigated by the Portland Police Bureau Traffic Division's Major Crash Team.

According to the police, investigators have so far concluded that a 1994 Mercedes 420 was driving southbound on I-205 in the middle lane at around 7:37 p.m. on Nov. 9 when it suddenly swerved to the right and drove off the right shoulder of the freeway.

The car crashed down the embankment and came to rest on the southbound I-205 on-ramp. It landed upright, half way into the roadway, and facing the wrong way (northbound) on the ramp.

East Precinct officers responded to the report of a rollover crash on the I-205 southbound on-ramp from Southeast Woodstock Boulevard. Callers to 9-1-1 reported that someone had been ejected from the vehicle and at least one other person ran from the scene.

Officers and medical personnel arrived and located the ejected occupant, later identified as the driver, suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was transported to a Portland hospital for treatment.

Additional officers, including a Police K-9, arrived and searched the area for any additional occupants. They did not find them in the area.

Based on the investigation so far, alcohol appears to have been a factor in the crash.
