Portland 8th most congested city

The Rose City is one of the ten most traffic congested metropolitan areas in the nation, according to a report released Wednesday by navigation company TomTom.

Portland was ranked No. 8 of 53 among cities with populations above 800,000. The TomTom Travel Index gave Portland a 25 percent congestion level, meaning that it takes commuters on average 25 percent longer to reach their destinations during rush-hour periods than when traffic is flowing freely.

A driver with a 30-minute commute in Portland will spend an extra 78 hours a year in traffic due to the congestion.

Portland jumped four spots in the rankings. It came in at No. 12 in TomTom’s first quarter report released earlier this year.

The top 5 most congested cities were Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu, Seattle and San Jose.

Los Angeles had a 35 percent congestion level. A driver with a 30-minute commute wastes an extra 92 hours a year sitting in congested traffic.

TomTom captures data using travel time information from its GPS customers. The full report can be read at http://www.tomtom.com/lib/doc/trafficindex/2013-1101%20TomTomTrafficIndex2013Q2AME-mi.pdf
