Storm cancels Sunday Parkway, farmers markets, youth soccer games

The weekend storm blowing through the region forced the cancellation of several popular community events. They include all Portland Youth Association soccer games, the Hillsdale, Milwaukie, Woodstock and Vancouver farmers markets, and the Sunday Parkway set for Southwest Portland.

The cancellations are adding up as the National Weather Service issues a wind advisory for Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington for Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Gusts are expected to reach 50 miles per hour, producing broken tree branches and downed power lines.

The bike-oriented parkway event was scheduled to take place in from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 29. But city officials began notifying sponsors, vendors and residents of the cancellation on Friday because of storm predictions.

This was the last in a series of five Sunday Parkways events this year that take place in various neighborhoods and open the city’s streets to walk, bike, roll and enjoy active transportation and entertainment. According to city officials, the first four brought large crowds of Portlanders of all ages together to enjoy traffic-free streets for a day and to encourage active transportation year-round.

Sunday Parkways is organized by the Portland Bureau of Transportation with its many community partners, including presenting sponsor Kaiser Permanente, and champion sponsors Universal Cycles, and Portland Parks & Recreation, Metro, Bike Gallery, Clif Kid and the NW Health Foundation. The Jewish Federation of Greater Portland and Food Front were Southwest Portland event sponsors.
