First candidate files for Portland city office

Mary Hull Caballero didn’t waste any time filing to run for Portland city auditor,

Caballero, a management auditor at Metro, became the first to file for any of the three open city offices in Portland, shortly after the filing period opened on Thursday, Sept. 12.

Portland City Auditor LaVonne Griffin-Valade announced she won’t seek re-election to a second four-year term, which makes her position an open seat next year without an incumbent in the race.

The Portland City Council seats held by Nick Fish and Dan Saltzman also are up for election next May, but both have said they’ll run for re-election.

Caballero formerly served as an auditor with the Oregon Department of Transportation, executive director of Community Scholars and as a reporter for Texas Lawyer and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, among other past jobs.

She holds a B.S. in communication from Lewis and Clark College and an M.S. in public policy and management from Carnegie Mellon University.
