San Jose Earthquake fans arrested for assault in Portland

Two San Jose Earthquake soccer fans have been arrested in California for assaulting a man before a Timbers game in Portland in April.

Jennifer Marques, 29, is charged with Assault in the Fourth Degree, Unlawful Entry into a Motor Vehicle, Harassment, and Disorderly Conduct.

Uriel Vargas, 21, is charged with Criminal Mischief in the First Degree, Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree, Harassment, and Disorderly Conduct.

Marques and Vargas were arrested by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force on Aug. 28 and booked into the Santa Clara County Jail. The Multnomah County District Attorney's Office is pursuing their extradition.

Additional suspects in this case have been identified and charges for these suspects are pending.

The investigation began at approximately 5:30 p.m. on April 14 when Central Precinct officers responded to West Burnside and 6th Avenue on the report of a crowd of people jumping on cars, throwing bottles, being rowdy, and assaulting the victim, 40-year-old James Decker of Lake Oswego.

As officers were on their way, other officers and witnesses reported that the crowd was mostly soccer fans, associated with the San Jose Earthquakes heading to Jeld Wen Field for a soccer match between the Portland Timbers and the San Jose Earthquakes.

The Portland Police Bureau worked with the Santa Clara Police Department's Investigations Division to identify the individuals involved in the assault.
