School supplies drive gathers items for students

Pens, pencils, binders, erasers, notebooks and backpacks — it all adds up.

KGW-TV is running its a sixth annual School Supply Drive, through Labor Day, to collect enough school supplies and cash to send 8,000 local children to school this fall fully eqipped.

A reported one in two students will show up to school this year without the supplies they need to learn.

That means teachers typically spend upwards of $2,000 each year to ensure their students have the supplies they need to learn.

Donors may drop off school supplies at a collection site:

• Aug. 16 at Fred Meyer Hollywood

• Aug. 19 at OnPoint Credit Union - Lloyd Center, 1720 N.E. Ninth Ave.

• Aug. 27 at University of Phoenix, 13221 S.W. 68th Parkway, No. 500, Tigard

• Aug. 29 at the KGW studios, 1501 S.W. Jefferson St.

Donors also may contribute online; a $25 donation provides a child with the tools they need to learn for the entire school year. Visit kgw.com/school to donate.

Supplies donated at all sponsor locations go to the school districts in which they were donated.
