MPD: Officers save suicidal man from Springwater bridge jump
Milwaukie police say that a distraught 21-year-old man intended to jump to his death off the Springwater Corridor pedestrian bridge over McLoughlin Boulevard on Monday night shortly after 9:30 p.m.
He had left a handwritten suicide note near the bridge, along with some personal belongings.
Drivers on McLoughlin called 911 to report a man had climbed up the 8-foot-high security fence. They said he was sitting atop the safety railing and staring down at traffic about 40 feet below.
MPD Officers Greg Elkins and John Redenbo walked onto the bridge and approached the man, who made it clear he didn't want to talk to anyone. Police units had blocked all north and southbound traffic as fire and medical crews got ready.
When it appeared inevitable the man was going to jump, the officers say they swiftly climbed the wire fence and grabbed the man's wrists and the waistband of his pants. The man resisted, but they were able to yank him backward and onto the floor of the bridge, where he was handcuffed and taken into protective custody.
The man was then transported to Oregon Health & Science University hospital for medical evaluation.
