Autopocalypse: I-84 closure creates gridlock

The weekend closure of eastbound I-84 through Portland caused severe gridlock on northbound I-5.

The Oregon Department of Transportation responded Saturday afternoon by closing both Morrison Bridge on-ramps to I-5 to reduce the number of vehicles entering the congested freeway.

Drivers were advised to use Northeast Grand Avenue to Northeast Broadway to reach I-5 northbound. ODOT placed signs to help direct people to I-5 north. The Morrison Bridge ramps were scheduled to remain closed until I-84 reopens.

I-84 eastbound was closed late Friday from I-5 to I-205 for repaving. It is expected to remain closed until 5 a.m. Monday.

ODOT says travelers should expect congestion and significant delays due to the closure until I-84 reopens.
