Police: Drunk Damascus man rolls over pickup, injures passengers
A Damascus-area man is facing drunk-driving and possible assault charges after a rollover crash injuring passengers from Oregon City and Gresham early on Sunday morning along Highway 224 about two miles east of Estacada.
Oregon State Police say that, at approximately 5 a.m. on June 30, 24-year-old Kyle E. Elgin drove a 2002 Toyota Tundra four-door pickup westbound on Highway 224 near milepost 27 when he lost control and entered the north-side ditch. After rolling, the pickup came to rest on its side.
Elgin, who has not been using a seat belt, was transported by LifeFlight to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center with serious injuries.
His three passengers, who were also injured and transported to hospitals with minor injuries, included Kyle Volpel, 23, of Oregon City, Shon Shiiki, 22, of Gresham, and Sara Erickson, 19, of Oregon City. The passengers were using safety restraints.
State police, lead by Trooper Tracy Clark, are continuing the investigation and will forward any additional charges to the Clackamas County District Attorneys Office for consideration.
OSP Lt. Gregg Hastings said that the very busy scene on Sunday morning closed down the highway for less than an hour as Elgin was cited for driving under the influence of intoxicants. OSP was assisted at the scene by Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, Estacada Rural Fire District No. 69, American Medical Response ambulance and ODOT.
