OC man held for armed robbery charge in Canby

A 27-year-old identified as an Oregon City-area transient was arrested and charged in the armed robbery of a drive-through coffee stand on South Knights Bridge Road outside of Canby on Monday afternoon.

A Clackamas County Sheriff’s deputy on his way to the robbery scene spotted, stopped and arrested Nathan Edward Paul Nettler on Highway 99E between Canby and Oregon City.

The sheriff’s office said a robber wielding a large silver knife forced his way into the coffee stand near Arndt Road shortly before 3:30 p.m. After the lone 60-year-old female employee complied with his demand for money, the man stole the business telephone and her cellular phone and fled.

The victim ran to a neighboring home and called authorities.

An observant passerby provided authorities with a description and license plate number of the suspect’s vehicle.

The passerby reported seeing a red Mercury four-door vehicle parked a distance away from the coffee stand and a suspicious person on foot next the building.

An Oregon City Police K-9 searched the area where Nettler was stopped and found the knife used in the robbery, which the suspect had thrown from his car.

Nettler was lodged in the Clackamas County Jail on charges of second-degree robbery, first-degree theft and unlawful use of a weapon.

The Canby Police Department assisted the sheriff’s office in responding to the robbery.
