Salvation Army marks National Doughnut Day with goodies, donation

by: TRIBUNE FILE PHOTO - National Doughnut Day has been marked on the first Friday in June since 1938.OK, Homer, start your drooling for doughnuts.

It’s National Doughnut Day and the Portland-area Salvation Army’s “Donut Lassies” are in Beaverton to give free doughnuts to veterans and the first 100 people who show up from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, June 7, at The Salvation Army Veterans and Family Center, 14825 S.W. Farmington Road.

BakeMark, which bakes some of Homer Simpson's favorites, will also present a $5,000 check to The Salvation Army in honor of National Doughnut Day and veterans served by The Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army started National Doughnut Day in 1938 as a fundraiser for the Chicago Salvation Army. The event provided help the poor during the Great Depression and honored The Salvation Army’s “Lassies” of World War I who served doughnuts to soldiers.

Several Portland-area doughnut shops also are commemorating the day.
