Man suffers stab wound in possible gang attack

Police are investigating an early Sunday morning downtown stabbing that left one man hospitalized with a non-life-threatening stab wound.

According to police, at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 12, Central Precinct officers responded to Southwest Second Avenue and Ash Street on the report of a stabbing.

Officers and and Portland Fire & Rescue personnel arrived and found Marvin Antonio Rodriguez, 21, suffering from a stab wound to the chest. He was transported to a Portland hospital for treatment.

Officers spoke to the victim and witnesses and learned that the victim was stabbed on Ankeny Street, between Second and Third avenues. The victim told police he tried to break up a fight between two men, but got caught up in the ensuing melee.

The stabbing suspect was described as a 17-year-old Hispanic male, about 5-foot-9, weighing 140 pounds. Another suspect also was involved.

Both young men were last seen running east on Ankeny Street.

Preliminary information suggests that the suspect may have gang ties.

Anyone with information about this stabbing is asked to call the Gang Enforcement Team, 503-823-4106.
