by: PORT OF PORTLAND - No one was hurt when this crane collapsed at the Port of Portland on Saturday. No one was injured when a 600-ton crane collapsed at the Port of Portland on Saturday morning.

The outmoded rane collapsed while it was being disassembled.

Portland Fire & Rescue responded to a report of the crane collapse at Terminal 4 at 9:30 a.m. on April 20. Initial reports were that people may have been under the crane when it came down. Firefighters learned there were no injuries after they arrived, however.

Engine 22 from the St. John's station was the first fire unit to arrive at the location and took command of the incident at 9:35 a.m. The Specialty Rescue team from Station 1 in Old Town responded as well, with specialized rescue equipment and firefighters trained for Urban Search and Rescue. Fire personnel assisted the Port staff with evaluating the crane and structures, as well as the dock integrity.

"The staff here did a great job in recognizing when the equipment failed and getting all of their personnel out of harm's way," said Battalion Chief Tom Williams.

A total of 4 engines, 2 trucks, 1 squad, 3 chief officers and a fire boat responded to this incident. Fire personnel remained on scene until 12:04.
