Liberty's Pecsok wins state championship in high jump

EUGENE — Liberty senior multi-event standout Elizabeth Pecsok kicked off the Class 5A state track and field meet in style, winning a state championship in the girls high jump.

Pecsok, who will also compete in the shot put, triple jump and 100-meter hurdles this weekend, started the meet off with a narrow victory in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 4 inches to best Hermiston's McKenzie Byrd, who also cleared that mark but needed more attempts to do it.

Pecsok will be a favorite in tomorrow's shot put competition, where she owns the third-best mark in the state this season regardless of classification (42-5 1/2). Her time of 15.48 seconds in the 100 hurdles ranks third in Class 5A this year, and her top triple jump mark of 35-10 also ranks third.
