Braves take early lead in team standings

EUGENE — Banks wasted little time making its presence felt at the Class 4A state track and field meet on Friday, with junior Dallin Shurts winning a state title in the javelin and senior Amy Hilger winning a championship in the high jump.

Shurts blew away the field in the javelin, uncorking three throws of 160 feet or better to easily outdistance the competition. His winning mark of 163-7 came on his final throw of the afternoon and bested runner-up Justin Rich of Estacada (157-10).

Hilger's victory was a bit narrower, with the senior clearing her second attempt at 5 feet, 5 inches to outlast Ridgeview's Hosanna Wilder, who finished second at 5-4. Banks teammate Ariel Slifka, a sophomore and first-time state meet qualifier, finished in a tie for fourth place with a clearance of 5-0.

Those two early victories sent Banks to the top of the team standings. The Banks girls lead the field with 14.5 points, and the boys are in first place with 10 points.
