Hillsboro hotel opening is first in past 10 years

Embassy Suites is right next door to the new Hampton Inn, which opened in late July. It’s been 10 years since a new hotel was built in Hillsboro.

But now, two hotels are opening side by side on Northwest Tanasbourne Drive, answering a voracious demand for hotel rooms and meeting space in the greater Hillsboro area.

The 106-room Hampton Inns & Suites opened July 25. Next door, the 165-room Embassy Suites Portland/Hillsboro is under construction but getting close to completion. It’s due to open in November or December.

Both hotels are Hilton brands, but are owned by franchisee Western States Lodging in Salt Lake City.

When Hampton Inns opened, it came off the blocks with a bang.

“We sold one-third of inventory the first night, and on the second night, a Saturday, we were 100 percent full,” said Denise Tritcak, area director for sales and marketing for Embassy Suites Portland/Hillsboro.

How did they hit maximum capacity after only one day?

“Compression,” said Tritcak. “People know and look for the Hampton Inns brand, and we’ve been marketing since February, but also, this is a very tight market.”

The recently released Washington County Visitors Association (WCVA) annual report tells the tale.

In summer of 2013, occupancy for hotels in Washington County hit 86.4 percent. Broken down by area, demand was highest in Beaverton and Hillsboro, which reported 91 percent and 90.4 percent occupancy respectively.

Adding Hampton Inns’ 106 rooms and the forthcoming 165 rooms at Embassy Suites, Hillsboro’s hotel room inventory will jump 24 percent.

Within five miles of the two hotels are Intel, Nike World Campus, Columbia Sportswear and countless high-tech businesses. Visitors arriving at PDX can take MAX out to the Quatama station, where Hampton Inns will meet guests and provide a free shuttle to the hotel.

A tour of the new four-story Hampton Inns reveals more luxuries than one might expect for business travelers, such as a marble-topped community table near the entrance; a high-ceilinged dining area next to a 24-hour coffee bar and a serve-it-yourself full breakfast buffet; a saline pool with an accessibility lift; a large gym with free exercise machines, TVs and yoga mats; a 24-hour business center; a 600-square-foot meeting room and free parking.

“We’re so excited,” said Tritcak. “It’s really exceeded my expectations.”
