Canda comes to Portland State; Pickles sign 3 for GWL season



Former Grant High basketball guard/wing Bryce Canda has signed a financial aid agreement with Portland State.

Canda, 6-4, 195 pounds, will be a junior for the Vikings in the 2016-17 season, after playing two seasons for Central Wyoming. He averaged 19.3 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists for Central Wyoming in 2014-15. As a Grant senior in 2012-13, he averaged 12.0 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists.


Three more players have signed to play for the 2016 Portland Pickles, a college summer wood-bat baseball team making its debut in the new Great West League.

Pitchers Max Compton and Ryan Alsworth and outfielder Joey Sanchez are the latest to come aboard for manager J.J. Altobelli’s team, which will have 30 regular-season home games at Walker Stadium in Southeast Portland.

The Pickles open on the road June 3 and play their home opener June 10.

Compton is a right-hander from Palm Desert (Calif.) High. The 6-5, 210-pounder is a freshman at Cal Riverside.

Alsworth made 30 appearances and had 26 strikeouts in 20 innings last season as a freshman at Cal Poly Pomona. He is from Yorba Linda, Calif.

Sanchez, 6-0, 180, is a freshman at Long Beach State who is from Orange (Calif.) Lutheran High.
