Pioneer women lose at Vanguard




Vanguard 86, Lewis & Clark 66, at Costa Mesa, Calif.

The L&C Pioneers lost a New Year’s Day game on the road, dropping them to 1-2 on their Los Angeles-area holiday break trip.

Vanguard (6-3) took a 9-0 lead in the first three minutes of the nonconference game, led 40-25 at halftime and held its ground the rest of the way.

The Pios (1-1) finished with four players in double figures for each game of the trip. Against Vanguard, senior forward Kaitlin Mathewson scored 17 points (and had a team-high seven rebounds), while senior guard Natalie Kelly, 5-8 freshman guard Janessa Willie from Seattle and junior forward Ayisat Afolabi all had 10 points. Willie’s career high came in a career-most 19 minutes.

Lewis & Clark resumes Northwest Conference play with its next outing, a Jan. 8 game at home against George Fox. Tipoff is 6 p.m.
