Softball: The annual Little League Softball World Series returns to Alpenrose Dairy. Teams arrive today.

Baseball: The Northwest League All-Star Game, featuring players from the Hillsboro Hops, Salem-Keizer Volcanoes and other NWL teams, takes place at PK Park in Eugene, South vs. North, 7 p.m.

Wednesday, Aug. 6

Soccer: It’s the MLS All-Star Game at Providence Park, with top players from Major League Soccer taking on Bayern Munich in an exhibition, 6:30 p.m. (ESPN2).

Softball: The opening ceremony for the Little League Softball World Series is at Alpenrose Stadium, 2 p.m. Games begin on Thursday, Aug. 7 and continue through the championship game at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 13.

Sports birthdays

Aug. 6, 1958: Darwin Cook (age 56), the former University of Portland basketball guard was born on this day in Los Angeles and, at 6-3, 180, plyaed eight years in the NBA after being drafted in the fourth round in 1980 by the Detroit Pistons.

Aug. 5, 1962: Otis Thorpe (age 52), the 6-10, 245-pounder from Boynton Beach, Fla., played in the NBA through 2001, including 1995 with the Trail Blazers, one of his nine pro stops.

The Portland Beavers snap a four-game skid with an 8-4 victory at the Los Angeles Angels, who are first in the Pacific Coast League.

Portland’s first pro football team is named the Rockets. The team will kick off Sept. 3 with a 12-game season in the American Pro Football League. The Rockets name was selected from more than 1,000 suggestions in a statewide contest.

PGA stars Byron Nelson and Jug McSpaden are on their way to Portland for an 18-hole exhibition at Portland Golf Club against local pros Larry Lamberger (PGC) and Ted Longworth (Waverley Country Club).

Lind & Pomeroy Florists, a team of Jefferson High players, wins the American Legion state baseball title. The Florists beat Woodburn 15-4 in the final at the Vaughn baseball park.

Next up at Vaughn Street is an 8:30 p.m. baseball exhibition between the barnstorming House of David team and the Harlem Globetrotters.

Greyhound racing is in its 12th season at Multnomah Civic Stadium. Admission is 25 cents.

The third annual Portland Stampede rodeo has drawn a record of more than 125 entries for its weekend show at Jantzen Beach.
