Willie Mays and the San Francisco Giants play before a Thursday night crowd of 26,507 at Multnomah Stadium, defeating the Portland Beavers of the Pacific Coast League 12-5 in an exhibition game. (Portland’s population is about 372,000). Mays delivers three hits, including a double, with an RBI, stolen base and two runs for a Giants team that, after 22 games, is battling the Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates for first place in the National League. Mayor Terry Schrunk is at Portland International Airport earlier in the day to greet the Giants, who then take part in a pregame parade through downtown.
