Sports birthdays

April 30, 1941: Vern Burke (age 73) ... The former Oregon State tight end (6-4, 200) was born this day in San Luis Obispo, Calif. He went on to play three seasons in the NFL.

April 30 1983: Pat and Paul McQuistan (age 31) ... Twin brothers and offensive linemen from Lebanon. Pat (6-6, 315) played his eighth NFL season in 2013 with Tennessee. Paul (6-5, 305) won a Super Bowl ring with the Seattle Seahawks last season, his seventh in the league.

Oregon sports history

April 29-30, 1939

Preparations are underway for the fifth annual Soap Box Derby, for boys only and ages 10 to 15. Derby hill is Southeast 82nd Avenue between Tillamook at Siskiyou streets.

The first Oregon state best-ball golf tournament is set for Columbia-Edgewater Country Club, with 50 two-man teams.

Benson Tech is the defending city champion in fencing, one of several minor sports offered in Portland schools.

At Vaughn Street, the Portland Beavers defeat the Hollywood Stars 6-4 in Pacific Coast League baseball.

And in Hot Springs, Va., Portland’s Wayne Sabin challenges one of the nation’s top amateur tennis players, Bobby Riggs, in the finals of the Hot Springs Invitational. Riggs wins 6-3, 9-7, 8-6.
