COLLEGE SOFTBALL: No. 6 Ducks top No. 23 LSU 4-1



• No. 6 Oregon topped No. 23 LSU 4-1 in the Ducks' first of five weekend games at the Mary Nutter Classic in Cathedral City, Calif.

• Oregon State beat Virginia 9-1 in five innings at Catherdral City, Calif.

• No. 18 NAIA Concordia lost twice at the Simpson Round Robin at Redding, Calif., 3-0 to the host team and 4-3 to William Jessup.

  • Late runs help Ducks

    Oregon (10-1) won its 10th in a row, scoring twice in the top of the seventh to extend a 2-1 lead to 4-1.

    Sophomore Cheridan Hawkins (6-1) turned in her fourth complete game of the season, scattering six hits and giving up one run, with 12 strikeouts and three walks.

    The Ducks took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, and the top four batters in their order — Janie Takeda, Courtney Ceo, Alexa Peterson and Janelle Lindvall — went 7 for 12, with three RBIs and four runs.

  • Beavers break out

    Freshman Alexis Gonzalez was 3 for 3 with two RBIs as Oregon State pounced on Virginia for a 9-1 victory. OSU improved to 4-10, while Virginia fell to 2-9.

    The Beavers had lost seven in a row.

    OSU finishes its play in the Mary Nutter Classic at Catherdral City, Calif., on Saturday with games against University of the Pacific (noon) and No. 2-ranked Tennessee (7:30 p.m.).

  • Cavaliers 4-4

    Concordia's season record fell to .500 with two losses at the Simpson Round Robin in Redding, Calif.

    The Cavs lost 3-0 to Simpson, managing only two hits. William Jessup then held the Cavs to three hits and three runs in the sixth inning in a 4-3 victory over the Cavaliers.

    Laura Luther's bases-loaded triple cut the Cavs' deficit to one run in the nightcap.

    Concordia will play on Sunday against Menlo and Holy Names, both games at Oakland, Calif.
