A sampling of the local activity from this day in Oregon sports history:

• The Vanport College Vikings are getting set to play the Pacific Badgers in a basketball game tonight at St. Johns recreation hall.

• The St. Johns Gun Club is preparing for its first annual sportsman team shoot. More than two dozen team are entered. Each squad will use five shooters, only one of which needing to be a registered marksman.

• The Salem Hornets beat the Eugene Redwings at Eugene in a battle of the top two teams in the Oregon Hockey League.

• Joe "Flash" Gordon, star infielder with the Cleveland Indians, will speak at the second annual Salem Breakfast Club's baseball banquet.

• Coaches already pick members of the Oregon All-Star football team, which will play the Portland All-Stars Aug. 27 in the second annual Shrine Hospital game at Multnomah Stadium. Mel Ingram of Grants Pass will be head coach of the state squad in the game featuring 27 top high school players on each side.
