Feb. 13, 1983: 'Free' TV sports in jeopardy?

Something called "advertising-supported commercial television" is poking its head into the American sports viewing culture.

The Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers and Milwaukee Brewers are planning to launch the SuperSports Network. It will deliver, via satellite, at least 40 games by each team, plus other events, all for a subscription fee.

The new approach is threatening an end to the way Portland sports fans view games on TV, and it threatens to usurp the three national networks' grip on major league telecasts.
