MEN'S COLLEGE HOOPS: Beavers knock off Bruins 71-67

Oregon State pulled off one of its biggest wins in recent Beaver basketball history on Sunday, holding off the UCLA Bruins 71-67 in a matinee game at Gill Coliseum.

The Beavers raised their Pac-12 mark to 5-4, while UCLA fell to 6-3. Overall, OSU is 13-8, UCLA 17-5.

It's the first time OSU has been at .500 or better midway through the conference season since 1999.

Oregon State's Hallice Cooke scored a game-high 20 points and paced four Beaver starters and five OSU players in double figures. He was 7 of 9 from the field, making 4 of 6 from beyond the arc.

Angus Brandt had 13 points, Roberto Nelson 12 (2-for-8 shooting) and Eric Moreland 11 points (with a game-best 14 rebounds) in the Oregon State starting unit.

Off the bench, Deven Collier added 10 points.

The Bruins led 31-29 at the half, but Oregon State began to take control early after the break. But UCLA responded, and the teams were within one or two possessions of each other most of the way.

OSU had a 65-54 lead with 2:17 to go, but the Bruins cut the gap to 67-66 with 54 seconds left.

Nelson missed a jump shot with 22 seconds to go, but the Bruins made a turnover, then had to foul Nelson, who sank two free throws with 11 seconds remaining for a 69-66 edge.

The Beavers fouled, and Kyle Anderson of UCLA made a free throw.

Cooke went 2 for 2 at the line with five seconds remaining to ice the win.
