Jan. 3, 1974: County votes to buy Glendoveer
The Multnomah County Board of Commissioners approve the purchase of the 230-acre Glendoveer Golf Course from Portland Adventist Hospital.
The move figures to end a half-dozen years of controversy and confusion regarding the course's future and condition.
Commissioner Mel Gordon says the 36-hole layout should be developed into a "showcase of golf in the Northwest." He specifically calls for improvements that include a driving range, indoor and outdoor tennis courts and trails for bicyclists and joggers. Also, he proposes that Glendoveer add either a new or renovated clubhouse with a restaurant and lounge. Plus, he says a new irrigation system and links upgrades are needed.
