MEN'S COLLEGE HOOPS: Pilots down BYU in 3 OTs; Ducks lose 80-76 at UW

SUMMARY

• The Portland Pilots prevailed in three overtimes on Thursday night, topping BYU 114-110 in a West Coast Conference classic at Chiles Center.

• Oregon lost its fifth in a row, falling 80-76 in a Pac-12 battle at Washington.

    Portland snapped a nine-game losing streak against BYU with its 3-OT triumph.

    And the Pilots' 114 points were the most ever by a UP team against an NCAA Division I opponent.

    Center Thomas van der Mars and backup guard Bobby Sharp each scored 27 points for the Pilots.

    Van der Mars added 18 rebounds, and Sharp was 8 of 13 on 3-pointers — he rallied his team from eight points down in the second extra period, sinking a 3 with 31 seconds left and another one with 13 seconds to go to tie the score.

    Also in double figures in scoring for Portland: forwards Kevin Bailey and Ryan Nicholas with 17 points each and guard Bryce Pressley with 12.

    Guard Tyler Haws poured in a Chiles Center-record 48 points for BYU. The old mark of 43 was set by Portland's Matt Houle on Feb. 13, 1993 against San Francisco.

    The Pilots improved to 4-4 in the West Coast Conference and 12-8 overall, while the Cougars slipped to 5-3, 13-8.

    Portland led 45-40 at the half, and the teams were tied 80-80 after regulation, 91-91 through the first overtime and 103-103 after two OTs.

    BYU fell to 13-8 overall and 5-3 in the WCC.

    The Pilots return to Chiles Center for a 1 p.m. Saturday game against San Diego.

    Oregon is 1-5 in the Pac-12 after its loss in Seattle.

    C.J. Wilcox scored 23 points, and former Benson High star Andrew Andrews added 17 for the Huskies (12-8 overall, 4-3 in the conference).

    Washington led nearly the entire second half, and Wilcox hit a 3 with 43 seconds to go for a 76-72 lead.

    Oregon (13-5) got 18 points from Joseph Young, 11 points from Jason Calliste and 11 points and nine rebounds from Richard Amardi.

    The Ducks gave guard Dominic Artis and Ben Carter their first starts of the season, with Amardi and Calliste leading a bench that contributed 37 points.

    Oregon plays at Washington State at 4 p.m. Sunday.
