1949: UO football coach Aiken turns down Nebraska overtures

Jan. 11, 1949

University of Oregon football coach Jim Aiken announces — at a Kiwanis Club in Portland — that he will stay with the Ducks.

Aiken has been wooed by Nebraska, which still wants him to visit Lincoln, Neb.

But now Oregon State athletic director Spec Keene reports that the Cornhuskers are negotiating with Beavers coach Lon Stiner.

Also in Portland, the defending Portland Interscholastic League basketball champion Jefferson Democrats use 18 points from big Emery Barnes, 6-5, to defeat Gresham 56-33 on the eve of the PIL counting season.

Jefferson also is No. 1 in the PIL bowling standings.

At Salem, Fred "Happy" Lee scores 24 points to pace Portland past Willamette 65-60.

And Lewis & Clark coach Eldon Fix is happy about his team's recent weekend road sweep of College of Idaho and Whitman. Guard Fred Wilson hit the winning shot with four seconds left as L&C won 50-48 over C of I. And forward Dean Sempert played every minute of both games.
