Piquionne, 35, played in 26 matches with Portland in 2013.

The 6-2, 170-pounder from New Caledonia had seven goals and six assists.

• The Portland Thorns have chosen the nine players they are allowed to protect in Friday's National Women's Soccer League expansion draft for the new Houston Dash..

The Dash can pick up to two players from any team, or one U.S. allocated player.

The Thorns have protected Jackie Acevedo, Amber Brooks, Tobin Heath, Allie Long, Nikki Marshall, Alex Morgan, Rebecca Moros, Christine Sinclair and Kathryn Williamson.

Unprotected Thorns include Rachel Buehler (U.S. allocated player), Becky Edwards, Tina Ellertson, Angie Kerr, Karina LeBlanc, Jessica McDonald, Emilee O’Neil, Casey Ramirez, Meleana Shim, Nikki Washington, Tiffany Weimer, Michele Weissenhofer and Courtney Wetzel.

• Portland's Shalane Flanagan, from Marblehead, Mass., has enetered the 118th Boston Marathon. The 2008 Olympic bronze medalist was the top American finisher at last year's event, which was marred by bombings at the finish line.

This year's race is April 21.

• Portland’s Sage Palmedo won the women's saber gold medal at a Junior World Cup fencing event at Udine, Italy.

 Palmedo defeated Ekaterina Vorobyeva of Russia 15-8 in the final.
