PREP WATCH: Blues get revenge, tourney title
The No.-1 ranked St. Mary's Academy Blues (7-4) were hoping to get revenge for an earlier home loss to the Beaverton Beavers (66-38, Dec. 18) when the two squads met again Monday for the championship of the Nike Insterstate Shootout girls basketball tournament.
That's exactly what the Blues did, too, proving that they're worthy of being the top-ranked Class 6A squad.
They avenged that loss with a 45-34 win over the No. 5 Beavers (7-3) at Lake Oswego High.
The Blues took the lead from the start, led by freshman Bendu Yeaney (12 points), junior guard Tasia Bilbrew (11 points) and junior post Tyschal Blake (10 points).
It was the team's fourth win in a row.
St. Mary's earned its first Nike Shootout title after competing in the tournament for the last seven years.
The Blues went up 16-7 after the first quarter, led 21-15 at halftime and maintained their momentum in the third with a 30-21 lead.
The teams traded baskets for the most part throughout the fourth quarter.
The Blues will play their next game Jan. 7 at Central Catholic in their Mt. Hood Conference opener.
