SCORESHEET: Julius Thomas becomes second Viking to reach Pro Bowl

Former Portland State athlete Julius Thomas, who caught Peyton Manning's NFL-record 51st touchdown pass of the season for the Denver Broncos, is going to the Pro Bowl.

Thomas, who played four years of basketball but only one year of football at PSU, is one of four tight ends from the NFL's 32 teams to be chosen for the annual all-star game Jan. 26 in Hawaii.

If Denver advances to the Feb. 2 Super Bowl, he would not take part in the Pro Bowl.

Thomas has caught 60 passes this season for 752 yards and 12 touchdowns. The Broncos conclude their regular season Sunday against Oakland.THOMAS

A 6-5, 250-pounder from Stockton, Calif., the 25-year-old Thomas is the second Viking to be chosen for the game. Quarterback Neil Lomax made it in 1984 and 1987.

The other Denver tight ends to earn Pro Bowl honors were Shannon Sharpe, Riley Odoms and Dwayne Carswell.

This is Thomas' third NFL season. He spent much of his first two years in the league improving his craft and nursing ankle injuries. He was a fourth-round draft pick, No. 129 overall, by Denver in 2011.

Four other Broncos -- Manning, receiver Demaryius Thomas, kicker Matt Prater and guard Louis Vasquez — also were named to the Pro Bowl squad.
