COLLEGE HOOPS: Zips zap Beavers before Obamas


OSU loses first tourney game in Hawaii


At Honolulu, Oregon State suffered its first loss in five games attended by President Barack Obama and the First Family.

The Akron Zips beat the Beavers 83-71 Sunday night in the first round of the Diamond Head Classic.

Oregon State, 4-1 playing in front of the Obamas, fell to 6-3 this season. And, OSU lost 6-10 center Angus Brandt early in the second half to a knee injury.

OSU will play George Mason at 11:30 a.m. PT Monday in the next round of the eight-team tournament, which runs through Christmas. George Mason (5-5) lost Sunday to Iowa State 79-67.

Akron (6-2) led 35-34 at the half, despite 14 points by Oregon State's Roberto Nelson, who finished with 20.
