Oregon sports history

Dec. 19, 1988

Trail Blazers center Sam Bowie practices for the first time in more than a year, having miseed most of the previous two seasons with a broken tibia, as forward Kiki Vandeweghe also seeks to return from a back injury.

Bowie eventually does return to action — he plays 20 games in the 1988-89 NBA season, averaging 8.6 points and 5.3 rebounds in 20.6 minutes.

Vandeweghe gets into 18 more games as a Blazer, averaging 13.9 points.

But that is the last either man will play for Portland. Vandeweghe is traded Feb. 23, 1989 to New York for a first-round draft pick, who turns out to be guard Byron Irving.

Bowie is dealt to New Jersey on June 24, along with a first-round pick, for forward Buck Williams.

The Blazers, meanwhile, are in transition. Guard Clyde Drexler and center Kevin Duckworth are on their way to earning spots in the 1989 NBA All-Star Game. Mike Schuler will be replaced by interim head coach Rick Adelman on Feb. 18. Maurice Lucas will retire as a player and become an assistant coach. And Paul Allen will buy the team from Larry Weinberg on May 31.
