  • Marshall returns to NWSL Portland

Defender Nikki Marshall is back with the Portland Thorns FC.

Marshall, 25, played in every game last season as the Thorns won the first National Women's Soccer League title.

But the team waived her on Sept. 6, citing salary-cap problems. Three days later, the Washington Spirit claimed her in the league waiver draft. The Spirit traded Marshall to Seattle on Oct. 25.MARSHALL

On Wednesay, the Thorns got her and the No. 9 overall pick in the 2014 draft from the Seattle Reign FC for the No. 6 pick and a second-round pick in the 2015 draft.

Marshall started all 22 regular-season games last season. The Colorado native had the game-tying assist in a 3-2, come-from-behind win after extra time in the semifinals against FC Kansas City on Aug. 24.

The Thorns have the Nos. 9, 14, 22 and 30 slots in the Jan. 17 draft, which will take place at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia.
