Edmonton nips Winterhawks in shootout

EDMONTON OIL KINGS 5, Portland Winterhawks 4 (shootout)

Friday night, Rexall Place, 10,058 announced attendance

• The Hawks scored twice in the final 3:47 of regulation to tie the game before losing in a shootout in the rematch of Western Hockey League 2012 and 2013 finalists. (Portland won last year 4-3 in the final; Edmonton won 4-2 in the 2012 championship round).

• Portland picked up a point on its first of three road games in three days — and on Teddy Bear Toss night for the Oil Kings.

• Taylor Leier, the captain, scored his 21st and 22nd goals of the season at 17:13 (power play) and 19:04 of the third period.

• Nic Petan and Brendan Leipsic each had two assists.

Petan got Portland's lone score in the shootout, which went four rounds. And he gave the Winterhawks a 1-0 lead 4:43 into the game, as Portland came out aggressive and firing, leading 12-4 in shots after 20 minutes.

• Portland went 0 of 3 on power plays in the first period, which ended 1-1.

• Edmonton fans tossed 10,128 teddy bears for needy kids onto the ice after the team's first goal.

Edmonton coach Derek Laxdal: “We got the two points in the end, it was a hard fought win. It’s an emotional game. You’re playing a team you lost to in the finals last year, and you’re playing the Teddy Bear Toss game, so there are lots of highs and lows.”
