PREP FOOTBALL: Canby knocks off Sheldon

EUGENE — When Cole Thompson said earlier in the year, “This is when the giants fall,” he wasn’t talking about Sheldon.

Details, details.

Thanks to two second-half touchdowns by Thompson, the Canby High football team knocked off defending state champion Sheldon 24-17 Friday in the Class 6A quarterfinals.

The Cougars advanced to the semifinals for the seventh time and for the first time since 2009. They will face Jesuit, which cruised past Lakeridge 62-33 on Friday.

Canby (7-5) took its first lead over Sheldon on Thompson's 1-yard touchdown run with 2:24 left in the third quarter.

Thompson, a senior, added the highlight of the night on a 61-yard breakaway TD run early in the fourth quarter, and senior Alejandro Sandoval extended the Cougars’ lead to 24-10 with an extra point.

The Irish (9-3) scored late in the fourth quarter, but Canby recovered the ensuing onside kick to seal its first playoff win over Sheldon.

The teams were locked in a 10-10 tie after a back-and-forth first half.

The Irish scored first on a 31-yard field goal by Nathan Starnes, but the Cougars bounced back later in the opening quarter with Sandoval's 26-yard field goal.

In the second quarter, Sheldon reclaimed the lead on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Joseph Kuehn to Kellen Strahm.

Senior quarterback Austin Taylor was picked off by Trevor Vill on Canby’s ensuing possession, and Sheldon was able to pin a punt at the 1-yard line.

But the Cougars responded by engineering a classically Canby drive, covering 99 yards on 16 plays — all on the ground — and pulling even on Taylor’s 4-yard keeper and Sandoval’s extra point.
