PREP VOLLEYBALL: Rams go into state No. 1
No. 1-ranked Central Catholic heads the field for the Class 6A volleyball championships.
Eight teams begin play Friday morning at Liberty High.
Five of them -- the Rams, Jesuit, Clackamas, Roseburg and Sheldon -- made it to the two-day state tournament last year, too.
Central Catholic (27-2) has won its past 14 matches.
Jesuit is the defending champion and is ranked fourth this year.
A Central-Jesuit semifinal would take place at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The Rams own a pair of 2-1 regular-season tourney wins over the Crusaders.
Roseburg, a Cinderella story a year ago in placing second, is ranked third.
Clackamas, which beat Central Catholic for third place last year, is No. 7 and will open with a first-round match against the team it tied for the Three Rivers League title this year, No. 2-ranked Lakeridge.

Central Catholic got by Mt. Hoovisiting d Conference rival Barlow 25-13, 25-18, 25-20 at Central, West Linn knocked off St. Mary's Academy 23-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-11, 15-11, and host Jesuit beat Grants Pass 25-12, 25-10, 25-14.

Oregon Episcopal School is one of eight teams in the 3A state tournament Friday and Saturday at Lane Community College in Eugene.
OES will open against Salem Academy at 3:15 p.m. Friday. OES is ranked third in the state, Salem Academy 11th. The winner could face No. 2 Santiam Christian, which opens against No. 9 Corbett, in the semifinals, which are 8:30 p.m. Friday.
Portland Christian, ranked sixth, meets No. 3 Days Creek in the state quarterfinals at the eight-team tournament at Redmond's Ridgeview High. Their match will start at 10 a.m. Friday.
Portland Lutheran is one of eight teams lined up for the state tournament Friday and Saturday at Ridgeview.
The Royals' first match is 1:15 p.m. Friday against Condon/Wheeler.
Portland Christian is ranked fifth in the state; Condon/Wheeler is No. 4.
