THE STORY

The Hops managed only three hits as they lost their fifth consecutive game.

Eugene game into the game last in the Class A Northwest League in batting and hitting, and on a seven-game losing streak.

Hillsboro batters struck out 12 times without a walk.

The Hops have dropped eight of their last nine games.

WHAT IT MEANS

Eugene squared the season series with the Hops at 2-2 and moved two games ahead of Hillsboro in the South Division. Eugene is third and Hillsboro fourth in the four-team division.

Both Hops losses to Eugene have been shutouts; the Ems won 2-0 at Hillsboro Ballpark on June 18.

Ben Eckels pitched the first 6 2/3 innings for Hillsboro and held the Ems to two runs, both earned, on five hits. He struck out six and walked three.

• The only Hops hits came from right fielder Zachary Esquerra, catcher Grant Nelson and shortstop Ryan Gebhardt.

NOTES

•  Eugene scored in the first (without a hit) and sixth innings (on a walk, double and ground out), then added two runs on two hits in the eighth.

• Hillsboro left four runners on base and was 0 for 4 with runners in scoring position.

• The Ems had seven hits and four walks.

• Eugene did not commit an error.

• The victory went to Eugene's Erik Schoenrock (1-1), an 11th-round draft pick this year out of the University of Memphis. He pitched seven innings of one-hit ball, with eight strikeouts and no walks.
