Central Catholic punches ticket to 6A softball playoffs
Key games await in final week of the regular season
With a tough slate of games ahead, Central Catholic was happy to take care of business Friday afternoon with a 9-1 win over Reynolds that secured a spot in the 6A softball playoffs.
Central went up 3-0 in the first inning and never looked back. Baylee Westrick powered the quick start with a two-run double and came in herself two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Hailey Frilot.
The Rams were on the move again in the third inning when Ashley Doyle led off with a double that curved just inside the right-field line. Moments later, Westrick struck again this time sending a home-run ball over the left-field fence to make it 5-0.
Reynolds got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning after Jazmyn Boyd-Clark drew a lead-off walk and zipped all the way around the bases on Kelsey Oldhams single to center field.
The Raiders would load the bases before Centrals Katie Barron ended the threat by reaching over her shoulder and snagging a line drive in the pitchers circle. She struck out 15 batters, while surrendering only three hits.
The Rams put the game out of reach with a four-run spurt in the fifth inning that included a string of RBI-singles by Barron, Frilot and Koratney Speidel.
The Rams (9-4) secured at least a third-place finish in the Mount Hood Conference, trailing Barlow (11-2) and David Douglas (10-3) heading into the final week of the regular season.
Central will have a chance to move up the ladder with a game at Barlow on Wednesday before finishing with a game at Delta Park against Douglas on Friday.
The Rams are No. 9 in the RPI rankings moving up one spot would land them a No. 2 seed for the playoffs and home games through at least the first two rounds.
