David Douglas boys squeeze past Central to complete a perfect dual season

The Scots pick up the decisive points in the last race of the day to beat Central Catholic 74-71

TROUTDALE — The David Douglas boys track team picked up the decisive points in the day’s final event, winning the 1,600-meter relay going away to nudge past Central Catholic 74-71 and secure a perfect 5-0 showing during the regular season.

The Scots won the final tag-team race by nearly the full length of the straight away, but their biggest edge came in the field where David Douglas won five of the seven events.

Samson Ebukam got things rolling with wins in the shot put (50-feet-4 1/2-inches) and javelin (191-3), while Nate Tran won the discus (136-9 1/2) by a couple feet to complete the Scots sweep of the throws.

Ihoghama Odighizuwa led a 1-2-3 sweep in the triple jump with a winning effort of 41-8 3/4, while Dmitriy Vakulchik turned in another big day highlighted with a win in the long jump (20-2). He also won the 100-meter dash (11.19) and 200 (22.23), holding off Central’s Beau Duronslet by .19 hundredths in the longer race to force a four-point swing in the team score.

Josh Kellebrew supplied the Scots other victory in the 400 (50.65).

Central Catholic picked up a sweep in the hurdle races with Duronslet winning the high hurdles (15.48) and Lawrence Wilson hitting the line first in the 300 hurdles (41.54). The Rams also got wins on the track from Jean Baptiste Tooley in the 800 (2:00.29) and Kyle Thompson in the 1,500 (4:11.53). Jared Malone won the pole vault (12-6).

David Douglas and Central Catholic each scored lopsided wins over Reynolds.

The MHC district meet is in two weeks at Centennial High.
