Double-bladed

We’ve told you before, and we’ll tell you again, Greensky Bluegrass is one of the best acoustic-oriented bands out there, coupling soulful vocals with aggressive picking to create folk music deeply rooted in the past but easily accessible to contemporary crowds.

This two-night stand also showcases Portland’s Fruition, who bundle folk, rock and country with vocal harmony twine.

Greensky Bluegrass, Fruition, 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1-2, Wonder Ballroom, 128 N.E. Russell St. $20 in advance, $23 day of show; two-day pass $35. Info: 503-284-8686, www.wonderballroom.com.

by: COURTESY OF DERRICK REGO - Thy Will Be Done, a metal band and favorite of Metallic, will perform at the Roseland Theater, Nov. 6. Their album, Temple, delivers conformity-crushing anthems.

Our daily shred

Metalheads anxious to have their ears bleed already are anticipating the upcoming Trivium-Devildriver title bout.

However, if you want to check out one of the critics’ fave metal bands, don’t miss opener Thy Will Be Done, from Providence, R.I., whom Metallica handpicked for the 2012 Orion Music + More Festival.

Featuring J. Costa on deadly vocals, Chris Drapeau on tsunami-causing lead guitar, Kurt Fraunfelter on war-mongering rhythm guitar, Jay Waterman on thunderous drums, and Brendan Misturado on blow ‘em up bass, these boys look like a cross between grungey disciples of a metallic messiah and a biker gang that doesn’t suffer fools gladly. Their newest album, “Temple” takes no prisoners, delivering one conformity-crushing anthem after another.

Trivium, DevilDriver, After the Burial, Thy Will Be Done, 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, Roseland Theater, 8 N.W. Sixth Ave. $22. All ages. Info: 503-224-8499, www.roselandpdx.com.

Revel, revel

The Portland Revels perform extravagant Christmas shows featuring instrumentalists, costumed dancers and choirs. At this “Autumn Salon,” audience members can learn about the mumming traditions of Eastern Europe (mumming referring to seasonal plays).

Portland Revels, 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, Multnomah Friends Meetinghouse, 4312 S.E. Stark St. $15 adults, $10 seniors and students. 10 percent discount for groups of 10 or more. Info: www.portlandrevels.org

Goose pimples

Songwriters Allison Hall and Noah Woodburn have been performing as the duo Goose & Fox around town for some time now, but are just releasing their debut album “My Mouth the Sea.”

Hall sports a lovely soprano voice that soars gently over the album’s title cut, which you can hear in a YouTube video. She channels a bit of slightly husky Norah Jones on “I Hope You Know I Care,” which is layered with horns as well as a wee bit of pedal steel, giving the tune a late 1960s, early ‘70s vibe.

Woodburn gets to shine a bit on “Stay in My Arms,” a countryesque number that makes the duo sound like first- or second-generation transplants from Appalachia to the big city, sophisticated enough to win over the slickers but yearning for the holler deep in their hearts.

Goose & Fox, Barna Howard, Jeffrey Martin, 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, Lola’s Room, Crystal Ballroom, 1332 W. Burnside St. $8. Info: 503-225-0047, www.mcmenamins.com.

Heavenly holler hymns

Speaking of hollers, Northern California’s Rita Hosking has one of those high and lonesome alto-soprano voices that immediately evokes the mist on mountaintops, sunlight breaking through leafy trees, and creeks that ripple and roar.

But she also sings of forest fires, culture clash and demolition derbies. The guitar-playing folkie will share the stage with Portland’s mandolin-guitarist, progressive bluegrassy singer-songwriter Lincoln Crockett, a pretty damn good performer in his own right.

Rita Hosking, Lincoln Crockett, 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, Alberta Street Pub, 1036 N.E. Alberta St. $12 in advance, $15 at the door. Info: 503-284-7665, www.albertastreetpub.com/events/.
