Best Places to Fly Kites in Portland
There are few sensations that are as thrilling as watching a kite soar up into the sky on a windy day. But in a city as densely forested as Portland is, finding a clear space to launch can be difficult. Here, Elmer's employees recommend a few of their favorite flying locations around Portland:
Next to the Portland International Raceway, Delta Park West has a large grassy field next to the MAX's park and ride lot. Among other amenities, there's a picnic area and an off-leash dog area - and most importantly, level grassy fields. It's ideal for a single line kite up to 300 feet.
Broughton Beach on the Columbia River near the 42nd Street boat ramp is also a long-time favorite. If you park in the boat ramp lot, you must pay a $5.00 parking fee. On clear days, you can see Mount Hood - and as an added bonus, air turbulence from planes taking off will give you and the kites a thrill!
On the Westside at the corner of SW Vermont Street and 45th Avenue, Gabriel Park is a lesser known spot that also offers amenities such as restrooms and picnic sites in addition to breezy hills where you can catch a good kite-flying breeze.
The sports fields at Jackson Middle School on SW 35th Avenue also offer a lot of space. When picking a spot, look for open fields unobstructed by trees and power lines. School tracks, football fields and other undeveloped areas offer promising possibilities.
