NHS softball, baseball standouts honored as first-team All-Three Rivers League performers

League coaches confirmed that with the release of the 2017 All-Three Rivers League softball and baseball teams, both of which featured Tigers as first-team honorees.

Leading the way for Angela Stutzman's softball team was senior shortstop Paityn Willoughby, who was named to the first-team for the third consecutive season. Willoughby was also named second team All-State as a junior.

Willoughby, who signed on to play for Oregon State before the season, led Newberg in just about about every offensive category after hitting .492 with five home runs and 22 RBIs. She also posted a .656 on-base percentage (OBP) and a .918 slugging percentage.

Sophomore center fielder Sam Teran was also named to the second team for Newberg (7-17, 5-9 TRL) after hitting .368 with one home run and 18 RBIs.

Senior third baseman Brooke Hansen and senior second basemen Alanna Smith also received honorable mention as infielders after hitting .354 and .362, respectively.

Infielder Derek Maiben was the lone Tiger named to the All-Three Rivers League first team, but was one of six players to receive accolades overall.

Maiben hit .362 with 14 RBIs and one home run as a junior, leading Newberg (8-17, 5-12) to sixth place in the conference and an appearance in a 6A play-in game.

Junior Jacob Maiben, Derek's twin, was named a second-team outfielder after hitting .325 with 26 hits and 16 runs scored.

Earning honorable mention from league coaches were senior pitcher Taylor Palmer, senior catcher Trey Reohr, sophomore infielder Cameron Laroche and senior outfielder Grayson Hirte.
