Tigers Matt Weiler and Jasper Riogiest will represent the school at the upcoming state matches

PORTLAND — Newberg doubles teammates Matt Weiler and Jasper Riogiest have had one goal this season: qualify for the state tournament.

That's why the pair played together all season, as opposed to Weiler playing No. 1 singles, and the chemistry paid off Friday as the pair advanced to the Three Rivers League quarterfinals with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Lake Oswego's Cade Peebles and Eric Klein. That wrapped up their bid to state, but following a loss to West Linn in the semifinals, they bounced back to top Lakeridge partners Ryan Mandell and Ethan Davies 6-4, 7-6 in the third-place match.

As a reward, Newberg's top tandem will face Three Rivers League champs Patrick Kanapeaux and Jack Ninteman in the opening round of the state tournament, which kicks off Thursday at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton.

Weiler and Riogeist's run helped power Newberg to a fourth-place finish with 21.5 points, just 1.5 behind third-place Lake Oswego, while West Linn (41.5) cruised to the title and Lakeridge was second (32.5).

Several runs through the consolation brackets were also key to Newberg's finish, as Tomas Berales downed Tigard's Alex Follett 6-0, 6-1 in the consolation finals.

On the doubles side, it was an all-Newberg affair in the consolation finals, as Sterling Eide and Quinton Nigbur topped teammates Jesh Pintor and Mike Hopkins for the title.
