6A wrestling Unbeaten rivals will not make up their dual meet, originally scheduled for Feb. 6 but nixed due to weather
The Newberg and McMinnville high school wrestling teams have been on a collision course all season, each marching through their Special District 3 dual meet schedules undefeated ahead of their scheduled clash Feb. 6 in McMinnville.
That match was postponed to Monday due to inclement weather. But, with school also closed on Monday, the showdown to decide the dual-meet champion was cancelled with the Special District 3 tournament looming Friday and Saturday at McNary High School.
Newberg head coach Neil Russo said everyone involved is bothered that the teams wont get any closure on the dual-meet season, especially because the long-time rivals will no longer compete in the same league next year, as Newberg will join the Three Rivers League and McMinnville will head south to become part of the Central Valley Conference.
I know that they were pretty sure they were going to win and we were pretty sure we were going to win, Russo said. Thats when competition gets fun, when both sides expect to win but only one can! I guess well settle it at the regional meet this weekend, but it just isnt the same as a dual meet. Nothing compares to a match by match, slug it out, dual meet.
The dual meet would have also affected seeding for the district tournament, so the two coaches and their staffs had to hash out who would have won in order to fill the bracket at their seeding meeting Tuesday.
I think at this point in the season it is time to focus energy on the finale and point toward that, Russo said. Again, it is disappointing, but I think we are all on to bigger and more important things.
