Tigers first at competition

The Newberg High School cheerleading team began its quest for back-to-back state titles in style, winning the season-opening All-State competition Nov. 9.

The Tigers sent three teams to the competition, earning first, second and sixth places.

Head coach Lisa Berg said the teams executed well, displaying excellent technique and great showmanship.

“I believe our strength is the character of the girls,” Berg said. “That’s been the experience with everybody. They all are just so talented.”

Newberg’s top team was composed of Tia Runia, Allie Dummer, Abby Long, Isabel Bridges and Brittany Casey.

The runner-up squad includes Allison Schmidt, Rilee Rosauer, Kaitlyn Russo, Ally Hagen and Marlee Schroll.

The Tiger’s No. 3 group is made of Rachel McWilliams, Anni Gissel, McKenzie Morse, Sidney Fischer and Lacee Cloepfil.

Newberg will return to competition Dec. 14, when it will attempt to qualify for nationals at the USA Regional event in Portland.
